What is a Dry Washer for Gold Prospecting?
If you are new to gold prospecting, you may not have heard of dry washing. But it is an essential tool that will help you find more gold than ever before. Gold is not limited to "proven" areas like the California gold fields. You can also find gold in areas that have been untouched by mining operations, such as the desert. In some areas, the highest concentration of gold is found on the areas most prone to erosion.
Winnowing
If you're looking for gold in the desert, you can winnow with a dry washer, which will help you pick through loose rock and soil. Usually, gold is not visible in dry placer material, so it needs to be cleaned thoroughly. A tarp is perfect for drying the dirt in the sun. If you're using a metal detector, you can even find gold in the old tailings piles.
Dry-washing
Dry-washing for gold prospecting is a simple process whereby you can remove the gold from a mixture of dirt and gravel by blowing air through it. The dirt will usually be rock or pebble-sized and rarely is it easy to dig. Once the gold is extracted from the dirt, you can either use a classifier or run the mixture through a dry washer. A dry washer can either be a simple shaker with a bellows, or a motorized unit that separates fines from the lighter material.

High-velocity air passes through the unit creating an electrical charge that attracts gold to the riffle tray cloth. This charge attracts gold and holds it in suspension, while heavier materials sink into the riffles. The adjustable oscillating vibrator shakes the material to aid in its sinking.

One way to get more gold out of your streambed material is to dry wash it. Gold-bearing streambeds can be covered with a layer of sand or gravel. This layer is known as a bleed-off deposit. The deposit is caused by the natural erosion of a mine dump or tailing pile. If the bleed-off deposit contains gold, it's highly concentrated.

This ancient method was based on electrostatic attachment and the pulse of gold particles that hit the blanket. When the particles of gold are caught in the blanket, they produce an electrostatic charge and attach to the metal. The process of gold washing has evolved and now uses the same principle as ancient gold washers.
Efficiency
There are several advantages of using a dry washer when gold prospecting. Its ability to wash and remove heavy metals from soils makes it a viable option for small-scale operations. Gold is often found in small pockets beneath boulders and rocks in the desert. These pockets are typically formed by the pounding of gold into a crystalline structure called caliche. The deposits are then removed using a pick or crevice tool. Using a dry washer to clean these areas is particularly beneficial when the caliche is very close to the surface of the ground.
