What is a DIY Horizontal Murphy Bed?
If you are looking for a new bed to use in your home, you might be wondering what the difference is between a horizontal and vertical Murphy bed. The main difference between the two is the size of the bed platform. A horizontal Murphy bed is wider on the wall, while a vertical one is narrower on the wall. They require 82-92 inches of height to fit properly. If you are not sure whether a horizontal Murphy bed is right for your home, you may be able to find a DIY project online. DIY projects can often be cheaper if you build the bed platform and cabinetry yourself.

Vertical Murphy beds require 82 to 92-inch tall ceilings
To install a Murphy bed in a low ceiling, you will need at least a 92-inch-tall space in your ceiling. When closed, a Murphy bed sits vertically on the wall. Make sure you take these measurements before you purchase the bed, as they can be tricky to install if you don't know what you're doing. Make sure to choose a bed that fits the dimensions of your ceiling before you start shopping.

DIY Murphy bed projects can be cheaper if you build the bed platform and cabinetry yourself
While the actual frame of a Murphy bed can run upwards of $3,000, it is often more affordable to build the cabinetry and platform yourself. The cost savings is especially significant if you build the bed platform and cabinetry yourself, since these materials are typically inexpensive. You may be able to build the bed platform and cabinetry for less than $200, which is more than reasonable if you are on a budget.
