How You Can Build Capstan Winches Yourself

Capstan Winches

To build capstan winches, you need some rope and a few supplies. We've used Ben Stone and AB Chance rope, as well as double-braided low-stretch polyester. We also included an optional rope lock device. If you want to try this project, you can download free DIY plans for capstan winches. Follow these steps to build your own capstan winch. Then, you can get started!

Ben Stone

When it comes to building a winch, there are a lot of resources available, but nothing compares to the plans created by Ben Stone. The plans are created by the retired engineer himself, using AutoCAD software. Although he studied Engineering in the early 1980s, Ben has worked in the Construction industry for over 30 years, and his experience has given him the skill and knowledge to create cool projects for his own pleasure. Ben is always available to answer questions and adds new plans regularly.

AB Chance

A quality capstan winch is an essential piece of equipment for any construction or mining operation. The AB Chance Capstan Hitch Mount is specially designed for remote sites and allows the capstan to be swung to the proper angle. This bracket is simple to use and includes a specially designed rope hook. This makes it easy to install and dismount the capstan and move it to the desired position. You can find several different types of AB Chance Capstans to suit your needs.

The first worker to install the hoist line was the owner's stepson. He attached the rest platform to the nylon rope. While operating the capstan hoist, the wife of the owner stepped away from the hoist and began to hold the rope. She called the radio station, which owned the tower, and they instructed her to call 911. The two men were not injured, but a woman's life was threatened.

The Series 90 capstan winches are lightweight and easy to transport. However, you must be certain to have an appropriate anchor point for your capstan winches. In addition to using a mast for lifting equipment, you can also use a tower leg. Because masts are tapered towards the bottom, you may not be able to use them as an anchor point due to their tapered nature. A good alternative to a mast is to mount them on a vehicle.

Double braided low stretch polyester rope

A double-braided, low-stretch polyester rope is perfect for building Capstan Winches. It offers high strength and torque, is abrasion-resistant, and is excellent for weathering. Its 3/8-inch diameter has 4468 lb. tensile strength, which is more than enough for many capstan winches. Double-braided ropes can be ordered in lengths up to 984 feet (300 meters).

This durable, low-stretch rope from the Portable Winch Co. is available in black and white. Its low stretch properties make it the perfect material for building capstan winches. Unlike other materials that are less durable and have too much stretch, polyester rope is also resistant to abrasion. The double-braid ropes are durable enough for high-temperature and high-friction conditions.

Double-braided polyester rope is similar to double-braided nylon, except that it has less stretch. Both polyester and nylon ropes have a custom-colored jacket, but polyester is better for running rigging. These ropes have excellent gripping and weather and UV-resistant properties, and are also extremely flexible. If you're looking for rope for your capstan winches, then consider double-braided low-stretch polyester rope.

Optional rope lock device

If you plan to use your capstan winch for hauling loads, you should consider installing an optional rope lock device. A ratchet-type locking lever is available for the drum to prevent drifting. The device can be installed in the capstan itself or be added to a drive arrangement. When used on a capstan winch, the locking lever automatically supports the load when the fall line is released and the hoisting operator resumes. The device allows the operator to adjust speed and distance with precision.

When building Capstan winches, you should also consider installing an optional rope lock device to secure the cable. Most capstan winches can accept a 1/2" or 3/4" diameter synthetic rope. The length should be at least 300 feet. Choosing the appropriate rope size for your application is crucial. The rope length depends on the jobsite conditions and the purpose. A capstan winch is an ideal tool for lifting towers and antennas.

A rope lock device provides additional safety by preventing a fall. The device acts on the rope above the rope pulley 18. It has the same high safety factor as conventional CE-marked versions but is much more comfortable and allows a user to climb for longer periods. This device can also be used for improved work efficiency by requiring less physical exertion. If you have the proper equipment and know how to use it correctly, it can make your life a lot easier.

Another feature of a rope lock device is its ability to protect against the cables from being ripped by the drum. A double line means that the pull capacity of the rope can double, but wire rope can lose up to 13% of its pulling capacity per layer. This makes a drivable second engagement arrangement a must. This type of device comes with a transmission plate 16 and a rope pulley 18 supported by a drive arrangement 20. The motor 22 can be battery-operated, or it can be driven from a main power plant.

Another feature of a radial rope pulley is an optional rope lock device. The separation blade acts as a "shackle" by preventing the rope from being mutually jammed with the pulley. By providing friction between the rope and the pulley, it ensures a secure engagement. The separation blade can also be made of flat iron. However, it may be difficult to determine which type of rope lock device is best for a given situation.
