Cub Scouts can make use of simple wood candy dispensers to help them keep track of their favorite treats. This project is perfect for Bears, Webelos and Arrows of Light Scouts but requires assistance from an adult.
Cut two sides from a piece of trim. On one, draw an X from corner to corner; on the other side draw a circle that fits within the size of your fish bowl rim.
1. Wood Candy Dispensers
This DIY candy dispenser is ideal for Cub Scouts aged 6-12 who wish to create an enjoyable wooden project, which they can fill with candy or gumballs. No power tools are needed unless Webelos or Arrow of Light members require assistance using spade bits for drilling purposes.
Make the dispenser for Cub Scouts using two 2''x 6'' pieces of wood cut from two 2"x 6". They should then mark an X on one piece before giving it to another adult who will use a power drill with a spade bit to drill a hole through its center using the power drill with spade bit.
Once the hole has been created, it is wise to sand all pieces of wood until they are smooth. Next, your Cubs should use a ruler to draw straight lines from end to end of the square located in the center of their larger circle cutout. At where these lines meet they should trace a smaller circle using something round like a compass (or another suitable tool) in order to form the small opening through which candy will drop out.
2. Multi-Candy Dispenser
Cub Scouts of all levels--Bears to Arrow of Light--can participate in creating this fun wood project, perfect for Cub Scouts in Bear and Wolf dens. It serves as an introduction to woodworking tools like power drill, jigsaw and scroll saw - tools which require adult supervision when being used.
Cut 1x6 and 1x3 boards to length using a miter saw, align a 2-1/2"x 5-1/2" bottom board flush with the back side and edges of each of the side pieces, extending past 1" into front face of board; apply wood glue on adjoining faces before clamping firmly; cut a circular opening using power drill equipped with either jigsaw blade or scroll saw blade to complete project.
Sliding lever To create the sliding lever that will enable you to dispense candy, trace a half circle on a piece of 1/4 plywood and cut it out with a jigsaw. Next, mark where your sliding lever will sit inside it, and cut a window large enough for its passageway. Finally, if your Scouts have access to whittling chips for beveling edges of holes on slides for smoother finish if available - this step may require adult assistance with beveling edges along their edges for smoother finish!
3. Mason Jar Dispenser
Making this adorable DIY mason jar dispenser takes just some spray paint and some basic tools - the perfect addition to any kitchen, as well as making an excellent present! Plus, kids will have loads of fun working alongside their parents or siblings on this fun project!
Start by disassembling the Mason jar. Next, use a canning ring to trace a circle on its spout portion using scissors; once complete, secure and screw back together for use! Your new Mason jar is now ready for filling or use!
This jar is the ideal size for making homemade soap and lotion. Create one for yourself before creating more as gifts; fill them up with delicious homemade treats like syrups or other goodies for an eye-catching and thoughtful gesture!
Create this jar using leftover trim pieces! If you have scraps of wood lying around, cut and glue the desired lengths together - or purchase pre-cut pieces at your local hardware store - creating a 1/4'' rabbet edge without ever needing a router!
To complete the jar, a jigsaw can be used to cut a window where the sliding lever will go. Trace an irregular half circle using something round before cutting with your saw.
If you can locate a round piece of wood, this could also serve as the base of your jar. Simply ensure it fits securely inside its canning ring and meets its width requirements.
To make this dispenser truly useful, add a dowel with a small piece of wood hot glued on it as a handle - this will prevent the slide lever from coming loose when in dispensing mode.
4. Five-Chambered Dispenser
This dispenser holds an abundance of candy, perfect for Skittles, M&M's, jelly beans or whatever fits inside. To create it, start by cutting four equal length 2x6 pieces from wood using either a miter saw or handsaw; cut out one of them at 45-degree angles using either miter saw or handsaw for its base before screwing the remaining three together to the base using either a drill or power screwdriver.
To create the top for the dispenser, start by drawing lines from corner to corner on a piece of wood, creating a square. At where these lines intersect, trace a circle using either a compass or by tracing around something round such as a soda bottle to form an opening for candy to come pouring out of it.
On one of the two circles you traced, cut a small pilot hole close to its edge. Once done, insert your scroll saw blade into this hole and cut out a larger circle; don't throw this away; it will later be used to glue to the base of your fish bowl project!
