Building Your Own Chevron Dining Table: Mastering Woodworking

This beautiful Chevron Dining Table combines warm tones with the durability and strength of black walnut wood, highlighted with its natural knots and grain. A striking chevron inlay highlights these natural characteristics of its surface.

Add an eye-catching pieced wood modern chevron bench top to your family room or simply need an easy box frame coffee table? Our plans offer everything you need!

Measure Your Space

Before applying tape that will create your chevron pattern, it is crucial that you take a step back and inspect your markings closely. Establishing precise guidelines at this stage can ensure your finished design will be balanced and proportionate.

Measure your room's length and width using a ruler in feet; this will reveal the maximum table size possible within your space. Once you have this information, subtract six from both measurements to account for any walkways or walls which might come into contact with it during setup of the table.

Once your chevron pattern has been carefully measured and marked, it is time to assemble its frame. Start by cutting two 6-foot 2x4s with 45-degree angles on either end, followed by attaching these boards together using wood screws.

Now is the time to add details that will bring your chevron pattern to life! Apply a coat of primer on the table top, allowing it to dry completely before proceeding with painting your chosen hue onto exposed areas between tape strips with a paintbrush. If there are any mistakes, just touch up those areas using more paint as necessary - with patience and attention to detail, your table should look fabulous in no time!

Plan Your Layout

If you want to bring the wow factor into your family room, a coffee table is surefire way to do it. Not only will a beautiful coffee table create an eye-catching focal point and help define space but it will also become part of the sofa's life and become its best ally - holding all those remote controls while helping keep everything centered!

Chevron patterns look fantastic when applied to walls, floors or baseboards as they can be secured with nails while expanding and contracting unnoticed behind the baseboards. But on a table where wood pushing in all directions could cause warps and splits to develop over time could prove catastrophic.

Start by framing the sides of your table. Measure each short side, mark it on one of your frame pieces, cut and sand as necessary, before repeating this process for all four short sides of the frame. Stain or paint it before attaching it if you prefer; just be sure not to do it until all chevron pattern pieces have been installed!

Cut Your Boards

Ideally, when choosing a table for your family gatherings, it should be an integral piece that stands out. Our herringbone Chevron pattern dining table does just that!

As our first step, we created a herringbone patterned frame from cedar boards that measured 1'x4' and 2'x4' in thickness. Next we cut several 13-inch chevron pieces using a miter saw; these chevrons were laid out in columns with their end grain matching that of adjacent pieces so they alternate from direction to direction and gave the herringbone pattern its unique look.

Once all the chevron pieces were cut it was time to begin building the frame. I clamped a straight edge board or level to my work surface and used it to align all of the chevron pieces so they looked even when we added our base piece.

As part of my frame restoration process, I also sanded it to remove any rough spots or edges, in order to make it as durable and long-term as possible. While sanding, I also applied a light coat of Drydex wood filler in any grooves where necessary.

Glue & Nail

Once the wood glue has set, use two inch 18G brad nails to affix the frame to the tabletop using 2 inch 18G nails. Make sure all nails are securely positioned within the wood for a secure attachment. After attaching to plywood, begin painting - for optimal results apply a thin coat of primer before choosing your paint color; this step ensures an even application and allows for clean lines once tape has been removed from surface.

Once it comes time to paint, take your time following the guidelines you drew on paper. Spending extra time here will result in an eye-catching chevron pattern that looks professional. Allow it to dry according to manufacturer specifications before moving onto other tasks.

Build the Frame

Chevron patterns add dynamic symmetry and modern elegance to any table setting, whether used as a bold design element or to highlight unique wood grains - this trendy look will undoubtedly elevate your dining experience!

Once all your pieces are cut, it's time to start assembling the frame of your chevron table. Start by marking guidelines for your pattern with a pencil that contrasts with the color of your wood and serve as a guide when positioning painter's tape later in the process. Careful marking of these guidelines will ensure your final chevron pattern will be visually appealing and balanced.

Use your marked guidelines as your guide, and apply painter's tape to create the chevron pattern on your table top using painter's tape. Make sure that it's securely in place so as to avoid paint from seeping under, pressing firmly against any areas where there may be bleeding underneath it. After it has been applied, double-check its alignment and symmetry for any necessary adjustments before proceeding further with this project.

Once satisfied with your work, remove the tape and give your chevron table top its final coat of paint. As an extra precautionary step to protect and prolong its lifespan, add sealant or polyurethane as the final step to protect and extend its longevity. Form and function should go hand in hand, which is why we offer custom tables such as Horsen Chevron that come in various styles and materials.

Attach the Top

Once the frame is assembled, it's time to add the tabletop. Before doing so, however, take measurements of wall height where your table will go in order to ensure chair seats will be at an ideal height for comfort - this can be accomplished using framing square corners placed into each back wall corner and marking where your top will meet it - this way ensuring it fits into its new home perfectly!

Next, mount horizontal wood strips called cleats on both walls of your room in order to hold up the edges of your tabletop. Be sure to cut these cleats short enough so they won't show when your table is in place.

Figure eight connectors offer another discreet and apron-less solution to attaching tabletop to its frame. They're great for large tables that will require expansion/contraction with seasonal changes; however, if these fasteners prove too complicated or uncomfortable for use it might be easier to purchase a ready-made tabletop instead.
